Gabriel can see peoples’ souls when he looks at them. It’s not an ability he can turn off, but it's not just a straight 'look and see everything' kind of ability either. Basically, souls have layers and some people might have the skill or abilities to block his sight. In addition, the splintering of peoples' souls into daemons might make it hard for him to see things--like a heat-wave on a road.

Please do reply to this again if something significant enough happens to your character to change the tenor of their soul.

[Borrowing from Flah here: The stuff that's buried deepest are things that people would try to hide no matter what, no matter who. Things in the middle might be stuff your character isn't really comfortable sharing with a complete strange, but might share with a friend. Stuff on the surface would be emotions felt presently, powers that are active right now, or memories that are so strong they just immediately pop out.]

The thing about a cottage covered by wards created by the Antichrist in which an angel and a demon lived was that, once two others and a cat joined them, it got very small very quickly. Especially when one of them was Gabriel. The wards extended only so far, and the Archangel started making a habit of pacing the borders, occasionally stretching his wings and squinting, not entirely certain whether he couldn't see the wards because he wasn't meant to or because his angelic eyes were healing just that slowly. He couldn't really afford to risk his scouting trip until he knew he could handle Heaven's forces.

After the first night he had remembered that he still had Re-l's kitten still tucked away in a metaphysical pocket somewhere among his wings and fished the still half-asleep cat out to leave on the foot of Re-l's bed. Once it woke up, however ... well, to say that 'more room was needed' was a bit of an understatement. The kitten was already the size of a small dog. A renovation was probably in order.

Right at this moment, his Grace practically vibrating with restlessness, Gabriel flopped on the couch and whined: "I'm bored."

... Really, they were lucky he hadn't yet gone beyond flour-drops, newly-painted walls and random changes in furniture (or, as in the case of the garden, occasional additions).

After all was said and done, one would think that it would be a relatively simple thing for an archangel to slide between the universes and return people home. They'd be wrong, if only because it had been a little while since said archangel had had any control over those kinds of powers, a little while since he'd been able to look at the foundation of the universe, and, well ... maybe he'd forgotten the way.

Just a little bit.

And maybe it was the fact that his wings still felt a bit weak. Or maybe that his Grace was still kind of slipping through his control like sand through a sieve. Or that he was still half-blinded.

Whatever the case, he blinked around at the poppy-strewn field in England, holding his wings close and gingerly because of the ache in them, and said, "I think I might've taken a wrong turn somewhere ..."

Gabriel can see peoples’ souls. It’s not an ability he can turn off, but it is something for which he requires line-of-sight for the general soul-feel and direct eye-to-eye contact for the deeper soul reading. The combination of City vs Sleeper memories have also really clouded his ability to see details. Basically, he’ll catch glimpses overtoned with whichever set of memories the character believes most.

Please do reply to this again if something significant enough happens to your character to change the tenor of their soul.

[These are things that have heavily influenced who they are right now or indicate something which, if taken away, would stop them from being them; basically, it complements the ‘general feel’ with inclinations which may be vague or completely out of context, may include evidence of some particularly important power, and may be some combination of Sleeper and City characteristics--especially if the character is beginning to accept City memories as possibly true. Eg, Gabriel’s soul might show brightness, a horn, glimpses of his brothers (without it necessarily being clear that the people are his brothers), war, parties, pudding, various pranks, an Impala.]
